RYOB 2009

readown3The rules for this challenge are very simple…

* set a goal for how many of your OWN books you’d like to read in 2009

* read from your own collection between January 1st and December 31st, 2009

And, that’s basically it! You don’t have to create a list beforehand (’cause we all know that our reading preferences change as the year progresses), and you can even read books that come into your possession (that will be yours to keep) during the year!

Some other helpful hints…

- you CAN overlap with other challenges

- eBooks and Audiobooks count AS LONG AS they are from your own collection

- Optional: Join the Yahoo! group started for this challenge to discuss what you’re reading with other participants! Remember, though, the challenge doesn’t officially begin until January 1st. ;)

TO SIGN UP, please sign the Mr.Linky below, and add a link to your blog! Thanks! :D ***See NOTE below if you’ve already left me a comment previously!***

I am TOTALLY up for this! I was thinking of creating my own challenge but you’ve done all the work for me, so I’m just going to join yours. :)

I will be making a list though, more for my own benefit. I’ll get a post up on my blog about it soon.

  2. Lindy Says:

This sounds great I would love to clear my shelves of lots of books cause I have some that are going away once I read them then I would have more room! I am doing a pb one so for this one I think I will do hardbacks or large paperbacks. I would like to do 12 in the year. One a month sounds reasonable huh! We’ll see. Thanks

  9. I’ve already commited to reading at least this many through one challenge alone, so since we can overlap… (yippeeee) … I might as well join the fun.

Oh, and yes, my TBR pile is really that large. Eeep!

  15. Diane Says:

I need to participate in this was for sure; i’m in for 50!

    thanks

  16. Kristie Says:

This is going to be my first challenge ever! I am excited! With over 600 books unread and no more shelve space, I hope this one will get my butt in gear. Each year I set a goal for myself to read more of my own books, so this should fit in perfectly. I think I will select 40.

  17. Kara Says:

I would love to join this challenge – I have an extremely large TBR mountain. I choose to read 40 books and here is the link to my post about this challenge.

I am so up for this! I have owned some books for years without even opening them! What a good idea.

  20. I have huge piles of books in all corners of my room, so this will hopefully keep me motivated to get through some of them. Count me in.

  23. Kelly Says:

    I’m in. Here’s my list: http://khager.vox.com/library/post/i-declare-bankruptcy.html

  24. Jeska Says:

I see my name on the list so I guess I’m all set to start the challenge in January!

  32. Ms. Bookish Says:

I am definitely in! I will have to think a bit about my goal, though – will write up a post about it as soon as I decide. There’s no way I can pass this one up!

  33. Veronica Says:

At this moment, I only own six book that I have not read so…that will be my challenge. Nice and simple. I’ll read all six.

  35. S. Krishna Says:

  39. mcfitzsatx Says:

  40. stacybuckeye Says:

I’d like to participate (my first challenge). Here’s a link to the 25 books I’ve committed to reading. http://stacybuckeye.wordpress.com/2008/11/19/2009-book-challenge/

  41. Louise Says:

Woohoo – I will sign up as well. Sounds like a really good idea! I challenge myself to 10 books (but hopefully more) from my own shelves.

  42. -V- Says:

I swore I was going to limit my challenges in 2009…..this one sounds completely do-able, though. Sign me UP!

  43. Not sure why, but comments are working very well for me today. I surely hope this hasn’t posted three times!

    http://betweenpages.wordpress.com/

  44. Teresa Says:

I’m in for 30 books, and I’m stipulating that they have to be books I own as of Dec. 31, 2008–not books I aquire in 2009. Otherwise, I’ll just buy the book I want to read and not read the ones collecting dust!

  45. Bella Foxx Says:

I would like to join this challenge, I don’t have a number of books, I am just going to read all the books that I haven’t read that I own. Here is the link to my blog.

  46. Darcie Says:

Sign me up!! My goal is to try to tame my books I own pile so this is a perfect challenge for me!! Thanks so much for hosting! I would like to try to read 35 books that I own.

  47. I keep putting off reading my own books in favour of library books. This is just the spur I needed to dust off some of my own books. Now what is a realistic target???? I think I’ll go for 20.

  48. MsValerie Says:

I’m new to book challenges, having just joined my first two on J. Kaye’s blog. This one sounds like a great addition to my list…and a way to help me dig through my ebook and print TBRs.

I’ll commit to 75 books from my own collection…I’m down for 150 in the 100+ challenge, so this seems reasonable.

No blog….but I’m starting to think I need a place to keep track of these challenges.

  49. Anastasia Says:

Eek, I hope this’ll help me tame my monster TBR pile! I’m in for a minimum of 25. :D

    http://birdbrainbb.wordpress.com/

  50. Leslie Says:

As a result of my recent cataloging frenzy on Library Thing, I now know that I have 464 TBR books in my house right now! I’m going to sign up to read 30 of my very own books.

  51. DeSeRt RoSe Says:

I really like this.. so I’m all for it! Great idea for a challenge :)

This is my specific link for the challenge too

    http://desertrosechallenges.blogspot.com/2008/11/read-your-own-books-2009-ryob.html

  52. Sandra Says:

I really need to do this one. I thought I was doing well giving away over 300 books in swaps and giveaways in the past year. BUT I’ve just discovered that I received 400 books and have been too busy reading ARCs and new books from the library. They’re all just sitting there waiting for me. I’ll come back when I’ve put up a post about the challenge. I’ll promise 20, more if I can. Thanks.

  53. Roberta Says:

This is just the nudge I need to read more! Thanks Sara!

  54. Icedream Says:

I am joining but I am going very conservative because I know I am terrible about taking the time to read my own books. I am going to start with a paltry 5. If I read more then it’s a bonus ( I secretly hope I can read at least 15).

  55. thiendaserendra Says:

Hi, I am going to go for 12 of my own books. I have not written a blog post about it yet. Karin

  67. Hannah Says:

I am going to join in!

I have a book that I am starting today but I am sure I will have finished it by the 1st if I haven’t does it count as Number 1??

  68. Hannah Says:

Sorry my blog is: Http://www.rockangel.co.uk also my goal is 50!

  69. mizb17 Says:

Hannah — I think it’s only fair if we all wait to even START reading until January 1st. So, nothing that you start before then should count, okay? Thanks! :D

  70. Donna Says:

Sign me up! I have about 20 books I haven’t read.

  71. Hannah Says:

@mizb thats cool I just wanted to check :)

  72. Jules Says:

I’m in! I have lots of books just waiting to be read. But Im showing restraint and only having 15 for the challenge!

  73. I’m in! I did really well with my reading list this year – all from my own bookshelves. About a month ago, I’d already decided I’m going to read all series next year (books with sequels and such). I’m going for 20 books.

  74. MADELEINE Says:

I am in need to join this challenge

  75. Stephanie Says:

Okay, I’m hoping to read 20 of my own books this year. I’ve been making a concerted effort to read my own lately, so this will help! :) Hopefully I’ll read MORE than 20, but 20 sounds like a good place to start!

  76. Laura S Says:

Count me in. My goal for 2009 is the same as for 2008 – to read 52 books (which I did not make this year). I hope to have at least 15 of these be from my own collection. I don’t have a blog, but my booklist is on http://www.goodreads.com.

  77. Okay–THIS is the Challenge for me–rather, this is the challenge that I *thought* the TBR Challenge was. I’m going to make a main list and an alternate of 12 books each just like the TBR Challenge. I know I will read a LOT more than those 24 off my own shelves because most of the reading I do does indeed come from my own shelves….but those I will list are the books that have been sitting here the longest staring at me, ones I really need to at least try so I know if I’m still interested or not.

I should make myself follow the FIFO plan for my own library…first in, first out! LOL

    Cheryl

  78. Oops…I put my blog address in the website space…here it is!

    http://spuddiesblog.blogspot.com/

  79. Shonda Says:

Sign me up! I really need to join this challenge. My goal is 25 books.

    My post is here:

    http://shonchallenges.blogspot.com/2008/12/read-your-own-books-challenge.html

  80. Lexie Cenni Says:

    http://lastexilewords.blogspot.com/2008/12/read-your-own-books-challenge-2009.html

its a little ambitious, but since I read that many books (and more) in a year, and won’t be having a job for the forseeable future, its good for me!

  81. Nancy Says:

I’m usually a horrible failure at challenges, but this one seems like one that can’t go wrong. My goal is 25, but I usually read 80 books overall in a year, so well see.

  82. melissaboyettbrinkley Says:

I think this is the only challenge I will join in 2009! I am anxious to see how many books I can read in a year and how my reading habits change during that time. My blog is http://melissaboyettbrinkley@wordpress.com

  83. Gaskella Says:

This is definitely the challenge for me! I was planning to post about challenges and my general dislike of them too … I have managed over a 100 books so far this year, so aiming for at least 50 next year seems a good bet.

  84. Colleen Says:

I’ll sign up for this too, please. I’ll say 20 of my own books shall be my personal goal. I’ve recently gone back to the awesomeness of borrowing library books so maybe this will help get me back on track. :)

  85. Sue L. Says:

Okay, so I’m a bit behind in reading all of my email and I almost missed this one! Please sign me up. I’ve put a bit on my blog, but I’ll have to update it better over the weekend!

  86. Linda Sheehan Says:

Hi Jenn….I see I’m already on THE list already, blogless tho’ I am. I am going to go for 15 but I just have to make a list. Will do that soon. Thanks for doing this. LInda

  87. lovelylissie Says:

I would love to join this challenge. I’m always buying books and my list of to be read just keeps growing. This is a perfect challenge for me and will hopefully keep me focused on my reading.

  89. Jenny Says:

  90. Loucindy Says:

I was already planning on doing this, but it’s nice to find others who are doing the same thing. :)

  91. javajump Says:

Yep, this is a wonderful challenge. I want to read 20. Maybe I can read them and then clear space….for more books I pick up and never read. Hmmm. Vicious cycle.

  92. Maree Says:

I’m in! I’m doing 30 books but I have way, way more than that languishing on my shelves!

  93. Darcie Says:

My goal for 2009 is to read my own books from my TBR mountain!! This challenge is perfect for me!! Please sign me up. I want to read at least 25 books that I own. :)

  94. mizb17 Says:

Darcie — you’re already on the list, so you’re in! ;)

  95. kim in ohio Says:

What a great way to clear some space on my shelves!!!!!!!!!! the problem will be not to fill them up with new ones.LOL
    kim in ohio

  96. fuzzyface Says:

Yup, I’m definately doing this, sign me up! What a great find your website was! Last year I read about 96 books, which is the most I’ve read in one year since I’ve been keeping track. This year I’ve only managed about 55 so far (it’s been very busy). Last year I really wanted to hit 100 and was so close to doing it. Maybe when I retire in 40 years :-)

  97. Thanks for hosting! I’m in. http://challenges.mawbooks.com/2009-challenges/read-your-own-books-challenge/ That’s where I’ll keep my list. My reviews will be here: http://blog.mawbooks.com

  106. Cheryl Says:

    HI everyone,
I just joined the Yahoo group. I think this is a great group and I hope that I get rid of some of the books that I have. I am in Jenn’s TBR challenge and TBR lite challenge, to help me get rid of some of my books. Thank you Jenn.

I was thinking about doing something like this on my own, but my success rate will probably be much higher if I join your challenge! I plan to read as many of my unread books as possible in 2008 (that’s at least 50). No list yet, as I have to roundup all by TBRs first.

  111. My goal is 100. I’m attempting the 100 Book Challenge and I’m determined not to buy books this year!
Good luck to all of us in whittling down that TBR Pile!

  130. Florinda Says:

I’m committing to reading 20 of my own books this year, and hope to exceed that goal – but I’d prefer to make a conservative estimate. Here’s my challenge post: http://www.3rsblog.com/2009/01/my-first-reading-challenge-read-my-own.html

This is my first reading challenge ever :-) . Reviews of qualifying books will have an “RYOB 2009″ tag on the posts.

  131. I know I want to read at least the first four books on my sidebar list, but as a writer I am making a concerted effort to read more of my genre this year (YA Fantasy/adventure)– along with things related to my work, particularity folktales and myth.

I have 2 dozen books listed in my sidebar and hope/plan to work my way through some number of them, along with finishing the tail-ends of a bunch of books I started in 2008.

  132. laura Says:

Count me in as well! This is great as my resolution is to read what I already own and not to buy more books-my big weakness!

  133. yellojkt Says:

This sounds like a very easy challenge for me since I have at least a hundred unread books around the house. Sign me up for twenty. I will do some as part of my own challenge, where all you have to do is read one novel in the month of January.

  134. Erin Says:

This looks great! I plan on reading 20 of my own books this year. Here is my link
    http://erinsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2009/01/read-your-own-books-ryob-2009-challenge.html

  135. Stina Says:

I’m in for at least 24, seeing as how I have a few tons of books already.

I’m a BookCrosser, though, so I nearly always release my books after reading them and often receive books from other BookCrossers. Can I count those? So long as they aren’t given to me with a specific requirement to pass them along, like in a bookring or something like that?

  136. MizB Says:

Stina — I plan on giving away the books from my own collection after I read them, too — this will be a new thing for me, though. Normally I keep everything. But, I’ve decided that, if it hasn’t gotten an “A” rating from me (or 5/5), then it’s going to go. I can’t keep all of these books, as I’m running out of room — and not just for books, either! (my house is too small!)

As for Bookcrossing books, I don’t see why you can’t use the books if you’re not *required* to pass them along. Bookrings and such are more like “borrowed” books, which don’t really fit this challenge (if that were the case, I’d still be reading books from the library!) SO, anything that’s your’s that you don’t necessarily HAVE to give back or pass on counts.

  137. Stina Says:

Fair enough, MizB. I’ll be tracking my progress on this challenge at: http://strixaluco.vox.com/library/post/the-2009-ryob-challenge.html

  138. Ok, logic has it that I have two blogs and now I have two reading challenges — I can do that. So, RYOB is right up my alley and I have already started my first book — “Our Kind” by Kate Walbert. Happy Reading

  139. Opps — seems I have signed up twice! Sorry — I really need to write things down!

  140. I decided to join this challenge because I have way too many books gathering a pitiful amount of dust on my shelves.

    http://bibliophile23.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/ryob/

  141. Oh and I am signing up for 25 but aiming for about 50.

  142. Planet Books Says:

Another great challenge to help make sure I read what I’ve already got.

  143. Heather Says:

What a fabulous idea. I have at least thirty-five ebooks on my Palm Treo waiting to be read, plus at least ten paper books, so I’m going to commit to reading thirty books from my collection.

If anyone’s looking for a new book, I have a free novel available for download from my blog. :) (But Read Your Own Books first! :)

  144. Heather Says:

My blog link in the comment above is a bit off… this one’s better. :)

I added up all my books… there are 43 in the Palm and 13 paper. I’ll still say my goal is 30, but I expect to go higher than that!

    Heather

  145. Julie Says:

I read 66 books last year, 37 the year before.

I’ll set my goal at 50 books, as I want to get more knitting done this year :)

I don’t know if there are 50 in the pile under the bed and the bottom shelf of the bedroom bookcase, but I guarantee if there isn’t my husband will make up the difference by handing me what he’s finished with and saying, “here, I think you’ll like this one…”

I’ve already finished 3 this year, but two of those I started last year – do they count?

  146. Yvonne Says:

I’m a bit late with this, but I’m signing up. I’m going to read 20 books. I think I can do more but I’m not sure. So 20 it is!

  147. Angela Says:

I think I’m being ambitious to even pick the 16 books that I did because I am too busy for much reading. I need it to be a bigger focus in my life so this challenge will be a great help! Thanks!

  148. Vonnie Says:

Each year I try to read more than the previous year and last year I read 50 books, when my goal was 52. This year I would like to read at least 52 if not more. Thank you for the challenge.

  149. Do you have anywhere where we link our book reviews or no?
