I have no idea what a casula challenge is or a casual book. any definition or list of books to be included?
November 18, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Lindy — IMO, a “casual” challenge is just one that is more laid-back, and not so hard to do. I called this one “casual” because I, personally, find Classics to be tough to get through, so reading 4 over the course of a full year is more “casual” and laid-back than, say, trying to read 4 Classics in the span of a 2-5 months.
SO, just pick any 4 books written before 1970 (approx) — my own “definition” of a “Classic” book — and read them between January 1st and December 31st, 2009. That’s it!

Just finished my second book, The Catcher in the Rye. OMG I HATED IT!!! Why is this considered a classic?? I just didn’t get it. It took all I had to finish it, and that’s b/c I hate to not finish a book I’ve started.
June 14, 2009 at 2:47 am
I think that the only people that really liked Catcher in the Rye were boys. ROFLOL.
June 15, 2009 at 9:45 pm
I think that Catcher in the Rye speaks deeply and affectingly to the 13-14 year olds who feel out of place with the popular kids at school—I loved it when I was in 7th grade. Rereading it as an adult I was surprised at how weak it had become over the decades.
I love rereading because you can gauge your own changes in life because you know that the printed words on the page have not changed.
July 15, 2009 at 6:32 am
I finished my four casual classics!! Yayy! The four books are:
1. Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster
2. Lolita by Vladimir Naboko
3. The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway
4. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
A link to the reviews, if anyone’s interested. =)
