  5. Lindy Says:

I have no idea what a casula challenge is or a casual book. any definition or list of books to be included?

  6. mizb17 Says:

Lindy — IMO, a “casual” challenge is just one that is more laid-back, and not so hard to do. I called this one “casual” because I, personally, find Classics to be tough to get through, so reading 4 over the course of a full year is more “casual” and laid-back than, say, trying to read 4 Classics in the span of a 2-5 months.

SO, just pick any 4 books written before 1970 (approx) — my own “definition” of a “Classic” book — and read them between January 1st and December 31st, 2009. That’s it! ;)

  62. Wyn Says:

I just found this site. Is it ok to join this late in the challenge? I think I can read 4 classics before the end of the year. I will be slow though because I’m waiting for cataract surgery so it takes me awhile to read the books.

  63. Kim Says:

Just finished A Busy Day by Fanny Burney.
    Here is my review:
    http://pageafterpage-kim.blogspot.com/2009/05/busy-day.html

  64. Kelly Says:

Just finished my second book, The Catcher in the Rye. OMG I HATED IT!!! Why is this considered a classic?? I just didn’t get it. It took all I had to finish it, and that’s b/c I hate to not finish a book I’ve started.

  65. Wyn Says:

I think that the only people that really liked Catcher in the Rye were boys. ROFLOL.

  66. I think that Catcher in the Rye speaks deeply and affectingly to the 13-14 year olds who feel out of place with the popular kids at school—I loved it when I was in 7th grade. Rereading it as an adult I was surprised at how weak it had become over the decades.

I love rereading because you can gauge your own changes in life because you know that the printed words on the page have not changed.
